Community Outreach

USLI is committed to making a difference through community service, fundraising and volunteering, both locally and globally. Many of our programs focus on coaching, mentoring and building relationships with children and families in the Greater Philadelphia area. We also respond to natural disasters and other tragedies in the U.S. and overseas. Maximizing our efforts is important to us when we take action, so we always engage with our customers to see how we can make an impact together.

Our Theme This Year:

Challenge Your Perspective

Challenge Your Perspective In order to bring about any sort of change or growth, we must first examine our journey to understand how our own experiences have shaped our worldview. How are those viewpoints impacting our day-to-day and thought processes? We can appreciate and respect who we are now, where we came from and what we know without letting our past dictate who we will become. When we willfully challenge our own views and create space for difficult questions and conversations, we grow individually and in turn can share our knowledge and make an impact on others. Each of us has a vital role in being a catalyst for change. We don’t need to change the world, but how can we work to make it a little bit better? What we believe is based on what we know. As we learn more our beliefs should evolve. Understanding where we are — and how we’ve grown — from a diversity, equity and inclusion perspective is a crucial step. Through reflection, education, proximity, adaptability and time, each of us is able to be more intentional with our efforts and contribute to a stronger community

Amazon smile logo

The CARE2 Fund can receive donations when anyone shops through Amazon Smile. Simply visit the Amazon Smile web page before you begin shopping, type in CARE2 Fund at USLI Inc., and Amazon Smile will donate 0.5% of all eligible purchases to the charity you have selected.

CARE2 Fund

The CARE2 Fund was established to give members of the USLI community the opportunity to request donations to charities or causes to which they have personal connections. In 2012, the Fund was reorganized as a 501(c)3 charitable organization and renamed CARE2 Fund at USLI Inc. This allows donors to receive a charitable deduction for their contributions. In 2012, the mission of the CARE2 Fund at USLI Inc. was expanded. The Fund now also serves as a portal for funds raised from the community to support causes selected specifically by the company. This allows our community members to receive receipts for their charitable contributions.

Breastcancer.org

Breastcancer.org is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the most reliable, complete and up-to-date information about breast cancer. In 2022, we successfully executed October Together — Stronger Together, a month of virtual and in-person events to educate others, bring people together and raise funds in a fun way. Some of our events included a Pink Out Your Pet Contest, a virtual/in-person 5K, our annual auction and more. USLI also donates 1% of all new business premium to Breastcancer.org during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2022, we donated $390,000 to Breastcancer.org.

Haiti Outreach

USLI works with Poured Out and Clean Water for Haiti to provide water filtration systems to families in Haiti. In addition, we’ve established a program called Hoops for Haiti. In partnership with the Villanova men’s basketball team, USLI will donate one filter for every three-point shot made during the 2018-2022 seasons.

Over 50% of Haitian deaths are caused by waterborne diseases. From 2015 to 2018, USLI teams traveled to Haiti to install biosand water filtration systems in homes as well as water houses that provide clean drinking water for entire villages. Our trips provided fresh water for many people and employment for around two dozen Haitians. The unemployment rate in Haiti is over 40%.

We’ve made a commitment to make a greater impact in Haiti by encouraging our community to join our efforts over the next 5-10 years. Moving forward, we will focus our efforts on employing Haitians full time to contract and deliver filters to Haitians in need. So far, USLI has affected the lives of over 10,000 Haitians, and we are excited to expand these efforts over the next few years.

Additionally, since 2015, USLI has responded to multiple natural disasters in Haiti by providing much-needed supplies and rebuilding homes in affected areas.

Nothing But Nets logo

Nothing But Nets

We have partnered with the United Nations Foundation’s, United to Beat Malaria, formally known as Nothing But Nets campaign since 2006. Nothing But Nets provides bed nets for families in Africa; each bed net protects a family of four from malaria for over two years.

Malaria is particularly devastating in Africa, where it is a leading killer of children. In fact, there are 10 new cases of malaria every second. Every 60 seconds, a child in Africa dies from a malaria infection. Each year, USLI raises funds to send nets by holding a weeklong kids camp, a bake sale, training sessions, sports tournaments, virtual events and more.

2022 was our 16th year supporting United to Beat Malaria, and we are the only organization with them since inception. In 2022, we raised $48,700.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion logo

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

At USLI, our goal is to strengthen our community and culture by representing and embracing all ethnicities, nationalities, disabilities, genders, religions and sexual orientations. We understand it is imperative to educate and immerse ourselves in others' realities, acknowledge our biases and look beyond our worldviews. Within our community, we move conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion forward to ensure every employee has a sense of belonging, a voice and a seat at the table.

First Fridays, Celebrate USLI is a series of ongoing opportunities to learn about and celebrate fellow community members on the first Friday of every month. In 2022, we offered several virtual opportunities to learn more about each other by sharing our backgrounds and learning more about appropriate and more inclusive language. We played the Game of Life, cultural Jeopardy and also celebrated Black History Month, Women’s History Month and more.

Children's Holiday Party

Each year, we host a holiday party for our employees' children. In 2022, we hosted our welcome back in-person party. The Rudolph and Friends themed event featured photos with Santa, crafts, games, dancing, spin art, face painting, a family magic show and more.

Reading STARS Program With Winfield Scott Hancock Elementary

USLI has participated in the Reading STARS program since the 2007-2008 school year. Reading STARS is a phonics-based program geared toward children who are not reading at grade level. In 2020, we transitioned to a virtual program called BookNook by Scholastic. In 2022, we were able to tutor 28 children per week throughout the school year.

Vanguard Vocational Program

Since 2005, we have partnered with the Vanguard School in Paoli as part of its Community Vocational Program. Vanguard serves children with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Students from the program come to our company two days a week for job training and coaching. Each student is assigned a coach and an assistant coach to guide them during their time here.

The majority of our students have gone on to attend college or have secured gainful employment. Our coaches report having a lot of personal satisfaction from working with the students and helping them overcome the obstacles that might have prevented them from obtaining employment.

A Season of Giving Back

Each December, we collect gifts for the children and parents living in local shelters to offer them hope and help them get back on their feet. We create a virtual Giving Tree that allows our community members to raise funds and buy holiday gifts for the children and families. In 2022, we also fundraised for families experiencing homelessness at 12 shelters in our regional branch office cities, and our initiative raised $15,876.

Urban Creators logo

Urban Creators

In 2020, USLI began supporting local grassroots effort Urban Creators with their mission to nurture resilience and self-determination in Philadelphia neighborhoods. Urban Creators was founded in 2010 by a group of North Philadelphians with a vision to transform a two-acre vacant lot into an urban farm. By their third year in operation, their farm was established and named Life Do Grow.

During the pandemic, USLI funded 12th Street Catering, a full-service Philadelphia catering company, to purchase fresh ingredients from the Life Do Grow farm and use these ingredients to cook 1,600 meals each week; the meals were distributed to individuals and families at Urban Creators’ Mobile Markets free of charge. Additionally, our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team and other USLI community members have been assisting Urban Creators in building a greenhouse, installing a water filtration system and volunteering with various projects around the farm throughout the year.
